To answer this question, leaders and key personnel of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) - Philippine Science High School (PSHS) System recently concluded the three-day Visioning Workshop on the Futures of the PSHS System STEM Education Program held from 23 to 25 June 2026 at the PSHS-Main Campus in Diliman, Quezon City.
Through futures thinking and strategic foresight methodologies, participants examined emerging trends, mapped systems and drivers of change, and developed future scenarios and action plans that could shape the next three decades of STEM education in Pisay.
Conducted in partnership with the University of the Philippines National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP NISMED) and the Department of Science and Technology - National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (DOST-NAST), the workshop was facilitated by Dr. Sheryl Lyn C. Monterola, Executive Director of UP NISMED, together with her team of experts in futures thinking and strategic foresight. DOST-NAST, led by Academician (Acd.) Jose Maria P. Balmaceda, likewise provided guidance and support throughout the workshop.
The participants went through four key phases — Framing, Analysis, Creation, and Expression — culminating in the presentation of envisioned futures and strategic directions for the System.
"Minsan marami tayong pina-plano pero kapag mayroon ng trahedyang nangyayari, hindi [na] tayo handa... [Gamitin] ang values, more than just reputation and competency," Acd. Jose Maria P. Balmaceda said in his Closing Remarks.
This activity forms part of the System's efforts to develop a long-term foresight framework and an initial 30-year strategic horizon that will help guide policies, programs, and innovations as the country's premier science high school system continues to nurture future scientists, innovators, and leaders for the nation.
