Over 400 Filipinos across the country have undergone actual foot sizing and comprehensive foot measurements through SizePH, a technology-driven initiative spearheaded by the Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI). SizePH aims to provide Filipinos with more accurate and accessible footwear information by measuring individual foot dimensions and helping consumers determine the footwear best suited to their needs, not only the length of the foot but also its width, shape, and other anatomical characteristics.

The data-gathering initiative began on 13 July 2026, and has so far recorded measurements from 238 Filipino women and 139 Filipino men across the country.

The technology was also featured at the first-ever Global Textile Congress and Philippine Textile Congress 2026, held at the University of the Philippines Diliman. Participants received free 3D foot scans and detailed measurement information, including foot length, width, instep, arch height, and girth.

The initiative puts Filipino foot measurements at the center of local footwear innovation, supporting the industry in developing products that respond to the actual needs of Filipino consumers while promoting greater comfort, mobility, and injury prevention with every step.

Supporting local footwear innovation

SizePH is part of DOST-PTRI's flagship footwear innovation program, SAFATOS, or the Shoes and Footwear Accessories R&D on Textile-based Omnibus Solutions for the Philippine Shoe Industry Program. The program focuses on developing innovative textile-based solutions for the local footwear industry while working with Filipino designers, shoemakers, and manufacturers to establish a self-sustaining textile-footwear ecosystem anchored on sustainable materials, modern product development, and homegrown design.

Beyond providing individual measurements, SizePH seeks to establish a national foot-sizing initiative and develop a localized footwear-sizing database based on actual measurements of Filipino feet.

During the Congress, 79 participants had their feet scanned, further expanding the project's growing database. Among those who underwent the scan was Aryan F. Llamasares, who welcomed the opportunity to learn more about his feet after discovering that being flat-footed could affect his posture.

"Maganda itong initiative kasi mas nagiging accessible talaga yung information at accurate na sukat ng paa nating mga Pilipino. Nalalaman din namin ano talaga yung convenient na footwear para sa amin. So next time alam na namin need namin hanapin at bilhin." - Aryan F. Llamasares

Following the 3D scanning process, SizePH also provides shoe-fitting tips and explains how proper footwear can affect an individual's comfort and mobility. Participants are likewise given information on the materials and fabric components they should consider when choosing footwear.

DOST-PTRI plans to further bring the SizePH technology to communities across the Philippines, bringing textile-based footwear innovation closer to more Filipinos while collecting critical data that could help establish a footwear-sizing system designed specifically for the Filipino foot.
