Local lore on how Baler got its name is rich with several stories. But the most accepted theory is that Baler comes from the word balod or balud. It was recorded and defined in Vocabulario de Lengua Tagala, a Tagalog-Spanish dictionary published in 1754 by Juan dela Noceda and Pedro de San Lucar. According to it, the name Baler originated from the word balod, which referred to paloma montes or mountain dove that once abound in the place. Balud commonly refers to the grey or the spotted imperial pigeon.
The year 2009 marked the quadricentennial anniversary of the Christianization of Baler. Presidential Proclamation 1696, declared 2009 as the Year of Baler, stating that "there is necessity to recognize the role of Baler in Philippine history and national development..."
For most tourists, Baler is popular as a surfing destination because of its distinct long stretch of gray sandy shoreline with crashing waves coming from the Pacific Ocean. Popularly known today as "The Birthplace of Philippine Surfing," Baler is one of the most visited places in the country not only by local but also foreign tourists. Thus, creating vibrant economic atmosphere and attracting more investments.
